As we consider what DEI means for Catalyst, we want everyone to also reflect on their own understanding of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. To help guide you on your own personal DEI journey, we have provided some activities for you to try whenever you are ready.
New Core Value Announced
At Catalyst, we pride ourselves in committing to building a welcoming environment wherever everyone belongs, and we believe our Core Values should reflect that environment. In February 2023, Catalyst introduced the newest Core Value that personifies the culture we want to continue at Catalyst.
“Promote an Inclusive and Accepting Environment”
All Catalyst team members were challenged to describe the new Core Value in one word. The creative responses sparked some showcase the feelings toward the new Core Value: hopeful, empathy, all-together, togetherness, embracing, fitting, marvelous, encouraging, enlightening, care, nurture, share, inclusive, welcoming, growth, dangerous, modern, acceptable, superb, thoughtful, necessary, perfect, and shamone.
Explicit Bias vs Implicit Bias
We often use the word “bias” to mean something negative, but it is a fact that every single person is impacted by their own biases or biases they have experienced. We provided an activity to help you understand the difference in types of biases, a more detailed overview of types of implicit or unconscious biases, and scenarios to consider to help you reflect on your own perspective on different backgrounds and experiences and their impact on your view of Diversity.
Equality vs Equity
When we focus on Equity, there is also the question as to why not focus on Equality versus Equity. It is important to understand the differences in Equality and Equity, and that Equality will always be a focus at Catalyst.
We are making a purposeful choice to put additional effort towards defining and putting action towards creating not just an Equal environment but also an Equitable environment.
The following information represents examples from resources that share the importance of Equality and Equity.
“To Speak Up for Inclusion, We Need to Speak About Inclusion”
This video was developed by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to highlight honest conversations from real people, including RBC employees about diversity and inclusion.
We hope this video provides a better understanding of differing perspectives on Inclusion, allows you to reflect on how you define Inclusion, and opens us all up to learning and embracing different viewpoints.
As always, feel free to contact the DEI Committee with any questions, comments, or suggestions via email or by submitting here.
